One thing that you might find common in your and your parents’ wardrobe is either a pair of denim jeans or a jacket. And why not, it’s classic and timeless that it can be aced by anyone. What originally was worn by workers in America due to its high durability has now been restyled in many ways. Now, we can witness the return of denim in every cut, wash and style one can imagine.
Also known as Canadian tuxedo, it is a concept of pairing one denim item with another. Denim-on-denim which was once considered fashion faux pas is now a classic style statement.

Slim-cut denim jeans and denim jackets
Classic denim jeans paired with a denim jacket might sound basic, but it looks sexier than you think.
- A slim boot-cut jeans is very much in trend right now. For summers, add a basic white tee and top it off with a well fitted denim shirt. For a cooler look, fold the sleeves of your shirt
- For winters, a V-neck jumper with a thick denim jacket is perfect. Go for an oversized denim jacket.
- Pair your outfit with a heeled ankle boots. This elevates your outfit to the next level.
Boyfriend jeans and denim jacket
- Another great denim jeans outfit is pairing cuffed boyfriend jeans with a denim jacket.
- Cuffed jeans are making a comeback in different versions. You can go for a plain boyfriend jeans or studded ones. If not cuffed, you can easily fold your jeans from the bottom hem.
- Add a pop-off colour with a pair of pointed-toe pumps to break off the monochromatic theme of your outfit
Denim skirt and denim shirt
Don’t limit your denim-on-denim outfit to jeans. Give denim skirts a with denim jacket a chance too.
- Pair a denim miniskirt with an oversized denim shirt. But don’t just stop here. For a uber-cool look, unbutton last few buttons of your shirt and tuck in one corner of it into the skirt.
- Try matching denim pieces in different colour, other than blue.
- Team it up with a pair of white sneakers or ankle length boots.

Last winter, trench coats have made its way back to our wardrobe. So this time, go for a light blue denim trench coat.
- Pair a wide legged dark washed denim jeans with a light washed belted trench coat. Wear a turtleneck underneath for a distinct 70’s vibe.
- You can either buckle the belt up or tie the belt in a single knot.
- Pair it with a transparent strapped chunky heeled sandals.

Take a cue from Britany Spears and Justin Timberlake and learn what to do and what not do when going for a denim on denim outfit. There are not too many fancy rules but just some basic tips.
- Do Play with colours. You don’t always have to pair single colour denims together. Ease into your look by pairing different shades like white denim jeans with a blue denim shirt or a black denim jeans chambray shirt. Try adding denim in different colours like pale yellow, orange, red etc.
- Denim-on-denim is supposed to look effortless. Although it is totally your call, but stop yourself from diving head-to-toe in the same shade of denim. Pairing dark washed jeans with a light washed denim jacket is the best way to go. You can wear a coloured top or a footwear to break off the single look.
- Don’t hesitate while dressing the look up and you can easily do that. Denims generally give a casual vibe but. Add accessories like a scarf, necklaces or earrings. Teaming the look with a pair of white sneakers will give a casual vibe, instead wear pointy toe heels or chunky heels for a chic look.
- Dress to kill, not overkill. Refrain yourself from adding denim accessories on your already denim-on-denim look. Keep it confined to your clothing. Having said that, denim boots, hair-ties, bags etc. are an excellent fashion accessory when added to your non-denim looks.
- Do experiment with different denim shades. As a general rule, darker denim shades gives a slimmer effect while lighter denims focus on your curves. Team a light upper like a cropped denim jacket with dark denim jeans.
