Just like a good night’s sleep, it is important to build an effective night skincare regimen. Forming a good routine is no rocket science. Most of us get overwhelmed by the number of products available in the market. Here we have put together an extensive list of hows and whats and whens for your benefit.
Why Night Skincare Routine?
Most of us think that day and night skin-care regimen is interchangeable, but it’s not.
- For daytime routine, the products we use are mostly meant for protection, either from sun or dust. On the other hand, nighttime is all about treatment and damage control.
- Through the night, our skin repairs itself and grows new skin cells. The skin-care regimen at night is mostly done for maximising the process of rejuvenation and restoration.
- According to skincare experts, cleaning, hydrating, nourishing- all these require layers of products. Hence, better to treat your skin at night and wake up with healthy and soft skin.

Does skin-care order matter?
Doing everything and using the right products and still no positive results? One of the reasons could be you are applying them in the wrong order. Yes, order matters!
For example – layering products with the thickest consistency like masks on top of the one with lighter consistency like serums makes it easier for the products t penetrate our skin.
- Remove Makeup Before Sleeping

- The first step of your skincare routine is removing your makeup. Reason–our skin repairs itself at night and by not removing makeup we are just blocking this process.
- They clog our pores by not letting it breathe, resulting in acne breakouts and fine lines.
- Though most of the makeup products are waterproof and at times it’s cumbersome to take it off, it should not stop you from achieving your dream skin.
- Always remove your makeup gently using a makeup remover, let it rest for a while and wipe off the solution.

- Using makeup remover alone is not enough. Although makeup-remover removes most of the dirt and oil but it still leaves behind some kind of residue.
- After using the remover, it is advisable to use a deep cleaning cleanser. It is effective in removing residuals like oil, dirt that deposit on our skin, leaving it feeling clean.
3. Exfoliate

- Once or twice a week, we suggest that you exfoliate. Not only will it help to remove dead and dry skin cells but will help in unclogging pores and prevent acne.
- It also ensures that other product penetrates your skin properly.
- Squeeze a little amount on your finger, gently scrub your face in circular motion. Don’t scrub it too harsh as it can damage the skin cells leaving your skin feeling irritated and dry.
4. Acne Medication

- Applying acne medication to your skin throughout the day might look appealing. But doing so will only make your skin drier and irritated.
- Don’t over-apply your acne-treating medication, instead give breaks between applications.
It is better to take a recommendation from a dermatologist as acne-treating medication varies according to skin type.
5. Serum

- Serums are your next step after cleaning. They are lightweight, liquid and easily penetrate deep into your skin.
- You can use a serum as anti-acne or as oil-control. They are also great for improving the appearance of fine lines and brightening up your complexion.
- Look for serums that are best suited to your skin type with ingredients like vitamin C for brightening your complexion, hyaluronic acid for retaining moisturiser.
6. Under-Eye Cream

Many of us assume that our face moisturiser works for our under-eyes too, but that’s wrong.
- The skin around our eyes is thinnest and very sensitive. It is prone to wrinkles and ages faster than other areas of our face.
- Now with smartphones and sitting in front of our laptops most of the time, it is best to use an under-eye cream. This helps in reducing fine lines, lightening dark circles and reducing puffiness.
- Apply under-eye cream an hour before going to bed. Massage the cream gently on your skin either in a circular motion or just lightly tap it in.
7. Moisturise

Moisturising is a very important step. After all those processes and exfoliation, it is important to hydrate your skin, especially at night.
- It is advisable to use moisturiser that is richer than your daily moisturiser.
- Gently massage the moisturiser on your face in a circular motion.
- This will not only hydrate your skin but will also reduce puffiness, relax your facial muscles and circulate more blood.
8. Mask

Last but not the least, hydrating face masks! Night masks are hydrating and rejuvenating.
- They are non-comedogenic, which means that they are light and sink deep into your skin without clogging your pores.
- Masks are generally the last step, applied just before going to bed to lock in all the products you have applied.
- Massage the face mask just like your moisturiser and wash it off in the morning.
End your skincare routine by moisturising your hands and a lip balm for your, well, lips. But with all of this don’t forget to hydrate yourself internally. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
