It is known to almost everyone that fashion is cyclic. We covered the 80s and the 90s. Now the clock is at the 00s, Y2K! Yes, some of us still have PTSD from the barely there, two-inch-zipper of the low rise jeans of the 2000s. 00’s have a bad rep for being the era of fashion blunders. When you think of the huge belts worn with literally everything, kitsch accessories and bedazzled logos, it does show 00’s as a fashion faux pas, some might even call it gaudy. Nonetheless, the Y2K trends are back and there is no denying it. Theshops will tell you how to ace the Y2K trends without looking like a spice girl.
What is Y2K?
First, let’s talk about what Y2K aesthetic. Often people think that Y2K refers to the fashion trends of the decade of 2000-2010, as its literal meaning is ‘year 2000’. While in fact, this aesthetic is much more than just the literal translation of the word. In the late 90s and the early 00s, people both feared and joyfully awaited the rise of technology. Therefore the Y2K aesthetic features futuristic and tech loving fashion, think – shiny fabrics, pleated skirts, chunky sneakers, mono chrome co-ords and colourful sunglasses.
The biggest influence on the fashion of the era were movies like Mean Girls and Legally Blonde, Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City and of course the Bratz Dolls. It I their closets that are the gateways to the best looks of this era.

Colourful Accessories
From necklaces to bracelets, sunglasses to hair clips, Y2K is everything colourful when it comes to accessories.
- Pair your beaded necklaces, chockers and bracelets with your metallic necklaces and bracelets for a fresh 2021 take on the Y2K aesthetic.
- The butterfly hair clips travelled from the 90s to the 00s and now has returned to 2021. Try doing a middle part and simply clip your front locks with the tiny butterfly hair clips for a cute soft girl look.
- Now, for an exaggerated Y2K aesthetic take your front locks and make two thin braids, secure it with a rubber band and now place the butterfly clips on top of the braids.
Bandanas
The most versatile accessory of the 2000’s was perhaps the bandana. This is that one accessory that will go with all your casual outfits. This staple of the 2000 can change your look instantly and give you a chic and carefree vibe. You can rock this headscarf in number of ways.

A fad that burned bright in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, is the cutest trend to have made a comeback this season. These tees are typically cropped just above the belly button. This is the trend that will add ‘fun’ to your wardrobe. You can find them with adorable patterns and characters or with quirky quotes and graphics on the top. Furthermore, they go well with almost any bottom.

It features an evolved low-rise jeans that is not extremely tight and snug. These are low-slung denims that naturally sit low on your waist.
