You don’t have to break a wall to make your living space look wider. There are few tricks to make it look bigger, brighter and wider.
Planning to redecorate your small room but the lack of space is bothering you? We got you. There are plenty of reasons why small spaces are better – for one they are easier to decorate and organise. Additionally, they are easier to clean. Here are few of our favourite tricks and tips for making your room look bigger and better than it was before.
Clear Out the Clutter
- There’s nothing that makes a small space feel more cramped than having too much stuff.
- Work out ways to get collections out of view, organized behind doors, table skirts, or on shelves.
- With things neatly arranged and out of sight, the space that is in view will feel orderly and open.

Use Wallpaper and Decals
- Using a well-designed wallpaper or decal pattern is another great way to make a small or narrow room look wider.
- Use a wallpaper mural, and install it so that the pattern extends from one wall and onto the adjacent one.
- This tricks the eye into seeing the two walls as one continuous surface. The more intricate the pattern, the more difficult it is to tell where one wall ends, and the other begins.
Have Furniture Match Your Wall Colour
- Understandably, repainting or wallpapering your whole space may not be a viable option for you due to a variety of reasons.
- These could include: you are currently renting; the cost of renovating is not in your budget; or maybe you just simply don’t want to be that adventurous with your walls.
- If this is the case, then another great solution for you is to choose furniture in a colour that matches the colour of the walls.
- By blending the colours, it will visually pull back your walls and expand the feel of room.

Utilize Glass and Lucite
- By using materials that you can see through, anything beyond will appear farther away. For example, in a tiny bathroom, get rid of an opaque glass shower enclosure and substitute a clear, frameless one.
- The room is the same size but it will look bigger. Now you can see all the way to the wall at the back of the shower––it may only be three extra feet, but the difference it makes is dramatic.
- You can also use glass or Lucite for tabletops. With a sturdy base of wood, stone, or metal, the space around the table will open up the view beyond.
Chooser Soft, Light Hues
- Choose colours that will make your room appear and feel larger, like a neutral tone such as beige or white.
- Another strategy used by experts is to create depth in a room by using darker colours and off-setting them with lighter coloured furniture.
- This adds a stark contrast between the two, creating depth, and inevitably making your spaces feel more dynamic by taking the focus off the size of the space and onto the more noticeable items in the room.
- For optimum effect, you can select soft tones of blue and green.

Lighten Up Floors
- Dark colours on floors, walls, and ceilings can make a room feel smaller and more closed off. While it’s easy to paint the walls, changing out dark floors is an expensive proposition.
- For a quick fix at a fraction of the cost of replacing the floor, try laying down lighter area rugs or carpet tiles over a darker floor to set a brighter colour palette for the space.
